How to Stop Perfectionism From Ruining Your Art Career

perfection kills creativity

Perfection is the enemy of progress.

Focus on learning & creating instead of running in a rat race.

In the vlog: Perfection kills creativity 💭 trip to Rajasthan 🪴 explore with me ✨ cozy art vlog ☁️

You will discover things about yourself that were once unimaginable. Explore together the meaning of life, and how perfection kills creativity, small drawing with oil pastel inspired by wildflowers.

Voltaire: “The best is the enemy of the good.”

Confucius: "Better a diamond with a flaw than a pebble without."

Shakespeare: “Striving to better, oft we mar what's well."

Or

Winston Churchill: “Perfection is the enemy of progress.”

We’ve all said this before. Right.

When I'm a perfect artist, then I’ll exhibit my paintings. When I have a perfect studio setup, then I’ll start my youtube channel. When I have expensive brushes and paint, then I'll be able to make good art.

For So...So and so reasons. So many people try to perfect something and I used to be one of them. Yes, you heard it right.

Let’s face it, it is in our nature to want to get everything right, but it is unrealistic. Especially when we are learning something. When we decide we want to try something new, the opportunity and fear of failure and rejection come knocking. Should we let them in?

yes.

Should we let them stop us?

No.

And that’s where great things happen.

At the end of fear.

“The person who fails the most, wins.” -Seth Godin.

Do you know what's really cool about fear?

It’s in our control. You get to decide whether you take advantage of this control

or let that fear control you. This is what defines your path.

“But what if I fail?”

Embrace it.

Failure provides an opportunity to grow, learn, change, and inch closer to where you want to be.

“Fear is a natural reaction to moving closer to the truth.” -Pema Chodron.

How is fear holding you back today?

What small step can you take today to conquer that fear? I would say, Just show up. Wherever that may be.

On a serious note- I want to say something. From the day I started my social media accounts my mind keeps reminding me to create perfect pieces of art and even though there are so many ideas on my mind I am afraid to try them because I am too afraid of failure.

What if its composition is not good enough?

What if my friends and family would not like it?

What if my audience does not enjoy it?

What if I ruined so much paint, canvas, and expensive art supply

And BLAH. BLAH BLAH.

For me, it was a very big decision to quit a job and finally push myself toward my passion for creating art. I just want to earn money through it. I want to experience the true me and accept my feelings, express myself, and the most important thing is that I want to do art because it gives me happiness. I don't want to look down on myself, just because of any silly excuse of not being able to present perfection in the eyes of others and also me.

In December 2021 I featured a challenge pinkemeber when I create and post 1 art per day on my Instagram handle. In the beginning, it was so exciting as I love to explore different styles and perspectives of art but on some days I feel it like a chore and instead of excited,

because I was forcing myself to create art.

Let me tell you one thing. For me, art is not something I just do any time, It is more what I feel and I am more mindful of this. Whenever I force myself to create art. It didn't work for me and I messed up because my heart was not present at that very moment. I create beautiful art, at least in my eyes when I feel like doing it. Few days before I was watching one of my favorite YouTubers Lisa Kroger’s Art vlog and her words resemble and resonated with me so much that I realized how much harm I was doing to my soul and my body, while I was rushing so much and getting exhausted not focusing on health, and not giving time to my family, friends, and to the people I love.

Also, one of my friends Reshma D'sa also reminds me to not rush to get more followers and likes and monetize and take time in exploring and improving my weaknesses. She said It might take a while, but definitely, my journey will be better and more worthwhile. Thank You so much, Reshma for your kind words, support, and blessings. Then I decided to focus more on learning and creating what I feel instead of striving for perfection.

And believe me, it is helping me a lot more, even though I am taking my time off from social media, turning off my likes option of mine and learning from others without judgment on the basis of their likes on their social platform is one of the good things to do right now.

I am more focusing on learning & creating instead of running in a rat race.

Failure provides an opportunity to grow, learn, change, and inch closer to where you want to be.

The person who fails the most wins.

Are you scared to start creating?

Are you afraid of trying something new?

Could you imagine how different life would be if we gave up on each failed attempt?

So, show up. You may fail. But through that failure, you will discover things about yourself that were once unimaginable. And it is then that you will decide you won’t let fear stop you anymore.

If you think you reach perfection, Then what's next, what's beyond perfection?

Your meaning of life will end at the very moment when this thought arises in your mind.

Remember.
